Term Definition
Buccal

Pertaining to or toward the cheek.

Cavity

Missing tooth structure. A cavity may be due to decay, erosion or abrasion. If it is caused by caries, it is also referred to as a carious lesion.

Cement Base

Material used under a filling to replace lost tooth structure.

Cementum

Hard connective tissue covering the outer surface of a tooth root.

Ceramic

Non-metal, non-resin inorganic compounds processed at high temperatures and pressed, polished or milled.

Cleft Palate

Congenital deformity resulting in lack of fusion of the soft and/or hard palate.

Composite

A dental restorative material made up of separate parts (e.g. resin and quartz particles).

Cosmetic Dentistry

Those services provided by dentists solely for the purpose of improving the appearance when form and function are satisfactory and no pathologic conditions exist.

Cracked Tooth Syndrome

A collection of symptoms characterized by transient acute pain experienced when chewing.

Crown

The portion of your tooth that is above the gumline. Also, the name of a procedure in which the covering of your tooth is replaced.

Cuspids

Also known as Canines. Pointy teeth that are 1 tooth away from the Incisors. Cuspids have 1 Cuspal, or point.

Cyst

Pathological cavity, usually lined with epithelium, containing fluid or soft matter.

Decay

The decomposition of tooth structure.

Deciduous Teeth

Baby teeth.

Dentin

Hard tissue which forms the bulk of the tooth and develops from the dental papilla and dental pulp.
