Term Definition
Abrasion

Loss of tooth structure caused by a hard toothbrush, poor brushing technique, or Bruxism (grinding or clenching the teeth).

Abscess

An infection of a tooth, soft tissue or bone.

Abutment

A tooth or implant fixture used as a support for a prosthesis.

Acrylic Resin

Resinous material of the various esters of acrylic acid, used as a denture base material, for trays or for other restorations.

Adult Dentition

The permanent teeth of adulthood that either replace the primary dentition or erupt distally to the primary molars.

Alveolar

Referring to the bone to which a tooth is attached.

Amalgam

An alloy used in direct dental restorations. Typically composed of mercury, silver, tin and copper.

Analgesia

The diminution or elimination of pain.

Anesthesia

Elimination of pain sensations by topical application or regional injection of a drug (local anesthesia), or loss of consciousness during which patients are not arousable, even by painful stimulation (general anesthesia).

Anterior

Teeth and tissues located towards the front of the mouth. Including teeth 6 though 11 and 22 through 27.

Artificial Crown

Restoration covering or replacing the major part, or the whole of the clinical crown of a tooth.

Benign

The mild or non-threatening character of an illess.

Bicuspid

Transitional teeth behind the cuspids, also Pre-Molar.

Bleaching

The process of lightening the teeth, usually using a chemical oxidizing agent and sometimes in the presence of heat.
